Linxiu Zhang is a professor and deputy director at the Center for Chinese Agricultural Policy, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). She is also a co-director of the rural education action programme at Stanford University. She obtained her PhD from Reading University. Her research revolves around policies for rural development in China, particularly poverty alleviation, labour market development, public investments, and the economics of rural education and healthcare. Zhang has published more than 200 papers in peer-reviewed journals and received numerous awards, including recent ones such as the ‘ten most outstanding women in science’ from CAS (2013), the ‘Celso-Furtado prize’ in social sciences (2013) from the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), ‘the Fudan management excellence award’ (2014), and a TWAS fellowship (2014).
