Introduction

RB Bhagat is a professor and the head of the department of migration and urban studies at the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) ­­– deemed university – in Mumbai. He was actively associated with the working group on urbanization set up by the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP), Paris, and a member of the IUSSP committee on the demography of armed conflict between 2006 and 2010. Over the years, he has been a resource person at the UNESCO-UNICEF India initiative on migration, a consultant at the International Organization for Migration, an advisor for a Yale University project on climate change and communication, a coordinator for the environmental information system on population, settlement, and the environment at the IIPS, etc.

Bhagat’s areas of interest include population, urbanization, migration, and the environment. He has worked on historical demographic data and the construction of social identities. Apart from his research, he teaches post-graduate students and guides MPhil and PhD scholars at the IIPS.
