Designation: Professor, Ethnoecology

Dr Jianchu Xu is a principal scientist and regional coordinator of East and Central Asia at the World Agroforestry Center. He is a professor at the Kunming Institute of Botany, a former head of ICIMOD’s programme on water and hazards management, and a former director of the Center for Biodiversity and Indigenous Knowledge. He obtained his PhD in soil science from China Agriculture University. An internationally respected ethno-ecologist, Xu has a strong background in interdisciplinary research and works on coupled human-environmental systems. His current research includes the investigation of early warning signals for global change, transboundary water governance, landscape restoration, ecosystem services and their resilience, agriculture, and integrative conservation. Xu has published over 100 papers in high impact journals including Nature, Science, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Conservation Biology, Fungal Diversity, and Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution
