Designation: Joint Director

GM Arif is a former joint director of the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics, where he headed a research division on population, poverty, and labour dynamics. Previously, he has worked as a poverty reduction specialist at the Asian Development Bank’s resident mission in Pakistan, a visiting fellow at the European forum for migration studies (University of Bamberg, Germany), the vice president of the Population Association of Pakistan, the secretary of the Pakistan Society of Development Economists, etc. Arif obtained his PhD in demography from the Australian National University, Canberra, with a specialization in international contract labour migration. He has written extensively on migration, urbanization, labour markets, and poverty issues, and he has more than 50 publications under his belt. More recently, his research has been focused on poverty dynamics.
